What animal would you be
After a technical interview, one hiring manager asked what animal they would be. They said a squirrel. They were still there eight years later.
surprise questions · culture
A technical interview, thirty minutes of actual work, and then: what kind of animal would you be? The candidate later said the manager did it because the question was dumb enough to knock people off their script. They answered squirrel. They stayed at the company eight years. The manager retired. Another interviewer once asked Kirk or Picard because the team had been arguing about it that morning.
These questions are not a personality OCR. They are a pressure test for whether you can play without becoming sarcastic or frozen. Sarcasm reads as contempt. A frozen silence reads as a person who only functions inside a rubric.
Answer like a person who has met an animal
Pick one trait and one joke, then stop. “A squirrel. I hide snacks and I remember where the dangerous branches are.” Done. Do not deliver a TED talk about adaptability. Do not say “a shark” unless you want them to picture a poster in a gym.
If you want a less cute version of the same muscle, something interesting, not on the resume is the professional sibling.
