Three strong hires and one no
A senior backend loop came back three strong hires and one no-hire. The no-hire was behavioral, and it was enough to sink the packet.
behavioral · follow-up
A candidate for a senior backend role at a public developer-tools company did the unlucky math. Three rounds came back strong hire. One came back no-hire. The packet died. The no-hire was the behavioral round, and the recruiter eventually said so.
The prepared stories were fine at the headline. The interviewer drilled to the third level on every one of them: the moment of conflict, the recovery, the stakeholder who was unhappy, the handoff when they left. The stories had been compressed until those rooms were gone.
The story they needed and did not have
Later they could name it. A manager wanted to patch version one. They wanted to start over. A downstream team had been waiting and hated the new timeline. The fix was a public review and a written delta of what that team would gain. When they left, they wrote a runbook and a note about the politics of the decision.
That is not a longer story. It is the same story with the rooms still in it.
Three green scores do not average out a thin hour. Practice the drill, not a longer list of anecdotes. The same behavioral miss, three times is what happens when you do not.
