They asked what you read last
A LinkedIn senior loop mixed conflict, on-call, and “what have you read lately.” Depth lost the packet, not the small talk.
hiring manager · senior interviews
October 2025, a Senior Software Engineer loop at LinkedIn. The hiring manager round was a pile of ordinary questions that are not ordinary if you have not said them out loud: why you left the last job, how this company differs from the last one, on-call, a fight with management, how you kept up during a career break, and one interesting thing you had read. The candidate named a Discord post about indexing a ridiculous number of messages. There was also a design problem: route 15,000 leads a day to sales reps by region, with rules the product team could change.
The round came back lean hire. The packet still died. The recruiter’s feedback was depth. Senior means the second and third sentence, not a plausible first one.
The question that looks like a book club
“What did you read” is not a trivia quiz. It is a check that you can enter a technical argument that is not your own ticket. If the only thing in your head is the job description, you will invent a headline and then go quiet when they ask what the tradeoff was.
Conflict with a manager belongs in the same prep. If you only have the polite version, read the failure story that ended on a mess and then tell yours without sanding off the disagreement.
